Where it is and how long it takes
Alagoa Grande is 120 kilometres from João Pessoa, in the Brejo Paraibano. The route takes the BR-230 as far as Gurinhém and Caldas Brandão, then the PB-079 through Alagoinha. About two hours by car.
From Campina Grande it is 65 kilometres on the same PB-079, through Alagoa Nova. If you are heading up for the São João festival in Campina, the stop fits on the way.
It is not a cold-weather town — and that changes the plan
Worth saying up front, because many people get this wrong. Areia sits at 618 metres and Bananeiras at 552. Alagoa Grande sits at 143 metros.
In other words: do not expect the mountain chill the other two deliver. Alagoa Grande takes part in the Caminhos do Frio cultural route, but what it offers is culture, not climate. Those heading up for jumpers and fireplaces go to Areia or Bananeiras. Those heading up for music, history and sugar mills come here.
Two names that were born here
Jackson do Pandeiro, the King of Rhythm, was born in Alagoa Grande. The town claims him at its gates: the entrance arch carries a giant tambourine and a sign reading Land of Jackson do Pandeiro. There is a memorial holding the musician's collection.
Margarida Maria Alves led the rural workers' union here and was murdered in 1983 on her own doorstep. The case became a symbol of the struggle over land in Brazil, and the Marcha das Margaridas is named after her. The house where she lived is a museum, open Monday to Sunday.
Two very different stories that fit into the same small town. That is what makes the visit worth more than the list of sights suggests.
What there is to see
- Theatro Santa Ignêz, from 1905, with Italian architectural touches. Open Monday to Sunday, 8 am to 5 pm, free entry.
- Memorial Jackson do Pandeiro, com o acervo do músico.
- Museu Casa de Margarida Maria Alves, também de segunda a domingo, 8h às 17h.
- Orla da Lagoa do Paó, que emoldura o centro da cidade — aberta e gratuita.
- Ponte do Quinze, o bueiro em arco que virou cartão-postal urbano.
- Caiana dos Crioulos, a quilombo community where the coco de roda dance is still alive, with its own museum.
- Cachoeira de São Félix e as quedas do Ouricuri, na zona rural, por trilha.
- Engenhos em funcionamento, com visita ao processo artesanal de cachaça e rapadura.
For the quilombo and the waterfalls, speak to the town's tourism office first: access is on dirt roads and not always fit for an ordinary car.
What to eat
Country cooking, unapologetic: salt-cured beef with cassava, buchada, diced goat, free-range chicken. Several mills and rural restaurants serve lunch, and that is where the food beats anything in the centre.
When to go
A Rota Cultural Caminhos do Frio passa por Alagoa Grande entre julho e setembro, e essa é a semana de maior movimento — oficinas, apresentações e feira ocupam as praças.
Beyond that, the calendar has the São João festival, the patron saint's feast of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem and the town's independence celebration. The rest of the year it is quiet, and the museums stay open every day.
Is it worth it if you are staying at the beach?
Two hours on the road each way makes it a full-day trip. It is worth it if you have a week or more in João Pessoa and want a day of small-town streets, museums and music.
If you do go up, pair it with Areia — they are close together, and the drive pays off better across two places than one. Better still if you can stay a night in the brejo.
For a short trip, the advice is the same as always: stay on the coast. Cabedelo, Conde and Lucena fill a whole day with far less driving.
