Faith spread across the state
Paraíba has shrines, hilltop crosses and pilgrimages from the coast to the Sertão. They are places of genuine popular devotion — people climbing stairs to fulfil a vow, not itineraries built for tourists. Facilities are usually simple, and that is exactly what many visitors are looking for.
We have grouped the destinations by distance from the João Pessoa seafront, where most visitors stay. Up to two hours is a comfortable day trip; the Sertão needs a trip of its own.
In João Pessoa
The capital was founded in 1585 as the Royal City of Our Lady of the Snows, and faith sits at the heart of the historic centre: the Cathedral Basilica of Nossa Senhora das Neves, the São Francisco church — one of the most important baroque ensembles in Brazil —, the Monastery of São Bento and the Carmo church are a few blocks from one another.
The key dates are Holy Week, with processions downtown, and 5 August, the patron saint's day and the city's birthday, celebrated at the Festa das Neves.

Up to two hours: Guarabira, Lucena and Cunhaú
Guarabira, about 94 km away, is home to the Frei Damião Memorial on the Serra da Jurema: a 34-metre statue of the Capuchin friar who preached across the inland Northeast for decades, unveiled in 2004. The site has a chapel, a museum and a prayer area, and receives thousands of pilgrims a year. The view from the hill alone is worth the climb.
On the coast, the Nossa Senhora da Guia church in Lucena is one of the most important historic churches in Paraíba. And just over the border in Rio Grande do Norte, the chapel of the old Engenho Cunhaú honours the martyrs of 1645, canonised in 2017.
The Brejo: Padre Ibiapina, Cruzeiro de Roma and Pedra de Santo Antônio
- Solânea (about 133 km): the Padre Ibiapina Shrine and Museum, in the Santa Fé district. Ibiapina was a 19th-century missionary who founded charity houses across the Northeast and died there in 1883. It is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in the state.
- Bananeiras (about 129 km): the Cruzeiro de Roma, a symbol of the Brejo's religious life, with visitors all year round.
- Fagundes (about 129 km, near Campina Grande): the Pedra de Santo Antônio, a huge granite boulder where devotees pray, give thanks and fulfil vows.

Areia, Solânea and Bananeiras also make up the Caminhos da Fé e Criatividade route, organised with Sebrae and the state tourism board, which links churches, historic sugar mills — such as Engenho Saboeiro, said to be where Areia's first Mass was held — and local producers.
Araruna: Our Lady of Fátima at Pedra da Boca
About 163 km away, inside the Pedra da Boca State Park, stands the Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima, at the foot of a granite wall, with a stairway and views over the hills. It is one of the most beautiful places on the list, combining faith with hiking and climbing.

The Sertão: a trip of its own
- Patos (about 311 km): the Cruz da Menina, one of the great symbols of Sertão faith, tied to the story of a young girl whom local people came to venerate. Today it has a shrine, an amphitheatre and pilgrimages all year.
- Malta and Condado (about 349 km): the Shrine of God the Father Almighty, on the BR-230, one of the state's newest pilgrimage centres.
- Itaporanga (about 421 km): the statue of Christ the Redeemer, a Sertão landmark overlooking the town.

These are trips of more than four hours by car. From the João Pessoa seafront, they make sense as part of a Sertão itinerary — with the Valley of the Dinosaurs, in Sousa, on the same road.
How to plan the trip
A well-used day: leave at 7 am, visit the Frei Damião Memorial in Guarabira in the morning, then drive about 40 km on to Solânea and Bananeiras for the Padre Ibiapina Shrine and the Cruzeiro de Roma, with lunch in the Brejo. Back by late afternoon.
- Check Mass and visiting times: facilities are simple and change on pilgrimage days.
- On pilgrimage dates crowds are large; otherwise the sites are almost empty.
- Modest clothing, shoes for stairs and water: almost every shrine is on high ground.
