It is not the end of the world — the rain here tends to be heavy and brief, not a whole grey day. But anyone travelling in May expecting January's postcard goes home disappointed, and the disappointment was avoidable.

It is the city's badly kept secret. Steady weather, good sea, high temperatures and an empty city — without January's crowds and without May's rain.

Clear skies most days, which matters for boat trips and sunsets.
Calm sea, with a good window for Picãozinho and Areia Vermelha.
Accommodation prices at their lowest point of the year.
Room on the beach, no queue at restaurants, trips without competing for a place.

If you can choose the dates and the beach is the point, this is it. The only drawback is that the day gets dark earlier than in summer.

Dezembro a março: o verão

Steady sun, long days, warm sea and the city at its busiest. It is the best weather with the worst prices — and New Year's Eve is the peak of both.

Dezembro: começa cheio na segunda quinzena e explode no Réveillon.
January: the busiest month of the year. Packed beach, high prices, everything open.
February: high season easing off, with Carnival moving according to the year's calendar.
March: still hot, already cheaper, and the start of the turn towards the rains.

Anyone with school-age children does not get to choose: they travel in January or July. In that case the advice shifts from season to lead time — booking early is what separates those who choose from those who take what is left.

This is the part usually left out. On the Paraíba coast, the rainiest period of the year runs from April to July, peaking between May and June.

What it is like in practice: heavy downpours, often in the morning or late afternoon, with sun in between. Going to the beach is not impossible — counting on the beach every day is.

Junho: o mês fora da curva

June falls within the rainy season and is still one of the busiest months of the year, for a reason that has nothing to do with the beach: São João.

Campina Grande, about two hours away, hosts what is recognised as the world's largest São João, and the festival runs for more than a month. The practical result: in June, accommodation on the coast is more contested than the weather would suggest. Anyone coming for São João needs to book genuinely early.

The temperature changes little through the year — this is a city with a hot, stable climate and no cold season. What changes is the rain and the crowds, not the thermometer.
